BATURAJA –  As a form of commitment to increasing the environmentally conscious economic movement of MSEs, PT Semen Baturaja Tbk (SMBR) as a subsidiary of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) through Rumah BUMN Baturaja held Coffee Roasting training and Socialization of the SMBR Eco Cafe Ngopi Bayar Program Use waste for MSEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) fostered partners.

The training, which was held on Thursday (14/9) at Rumah BUMN Baturaja, Ogan Komering Ulu, South Sumatra, collaborated with Deni as the owner of Cafe Ngupi Kuday, who is one of Rumah BUMN Baturaja’s independent UMK partners to provide experience and transfer knowledge about Roasting. Coffee as well as socializing the Eco Cafe Program which has been implemented in his cafe.

This Coffee Roasting or coffee roasting training targets MSEs who have registered with Rumah BUMN Baturaja, especially in the coffee sector, the general public and other MSEs who have an interest in knowing the process of making coffee.

In his explanation, Deni said that coffee roasting is an important process for turning green coffee beans (Green Beans) which are hard and difficult to drink into ready-to-drink coffee beans which bring enjoyment to coffee lovers. This process involves heating coffee beans at a certain temperature, and for a certain time to achieve the desired taste. This roasting process creates complex chemical reactions in the coffee beans that drastically change their characteristics.

He added that one of the main keys in roasting coffee is setting the right temperature. The right temperature will induce the desired reaction in the coffee beans, creating the desired taste, aroma and complexity. Advanced roasters monitor the temperature closely and adjust to the desired roast stage, be it light roast, medium roast, or dark roast.

“The roasting process also requires sensitivity to the aroma and taste of the coffee. A coffee roaster must be able to accurately differentiate the aroma and taste of raw coffee and roasted coffee,” said Deni, Owner of Ngupi Ku-Day Cafe.

Apart from that, Deni also invited MSEs to increase awareness of the environment and business development by working together to reduce the use of plastic and other waste in the community by implementing the concept of environmentally friendly shops in each of their businesses, by enforcing SOPs through the implementation of 4R ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replacement) thereby limiting the use of plastic from straws, plastic bags, drink cups.

SMBR Vice President of Corporate Secretary Basthony Santri explained that this training is a form of our concern for MSEs, especially in the coffee sector, to increase their knowledge in the coffee processing process and provide supplies to MSEs and the community in Baturaja with environmental care movements.

“This activity is expected to increase the enthusiasm of MSEs in Baturaja to innovate and start a positive movement by reducing the use of plastic packaging, plastic bags, plastic bottles and plastic cups, as well as utilizing waste. This movement is in line with the three pillars established by SIG, namely encouraging sustainable solutions and innovation, protecting the environment, and creating value for employees and communities,” said Basthony.

SMBR always supports the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through implementing ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) based programs in all its operational areas. This is part of Environmental and Social Responsibility (TJSL), in order to realize economic benefits in society. (*)
